Coding with OctoStudio

I had a lot of fun with Jon Ferrara’s grade 2 class the past couple of weeks. We spent a few hours trying out MIT’s OctoStudio. The students very quickly went from coding sprites with basic commands, to multi-layered games. It was a treat to see them progress from making a character move around by tilting the iPad, to including a “target” for the character to hit, to scorekeeping, and finally including obstacles that their character had to avoid. Below are two screen captures of students’ games.

The game is very accessible for second graders. The complexity of the games increased quickly as students layered in new features to their games. Within the app there are several examples of games, stories, and other coding projects. I strongly recommend OctoStudio for introducing students to coding.
