Simple Formative Reading Assessments Using Video

The first grade teachers have begun documenting their students’ reading fluency with the use of video. We are teaching students how to film themselves. After students film they watch the video and reflect on the reading they have just done. The goal is to get students comfortable with the process so they can begin filming themselves without help, to give them more opportunities to reflect on their reading. I have included two examples below the photos.

I should note that when we started these recordings we were using stands for the iPads. We quickly realized that is was much easier, and we got better quality video by filming off the edge of a table, as seen in the photo above.
